Little Wexford

Wexford Fun
I’m sitting in a tiny café on the corner of a busy street in Wexford drinking an iced latte with complimentary tea (they love their tea here). I ended up staying at a B&B last night for 45 euros right near the port. My B&B host fixed me a lovely breakfast that had the whole shebang…tomato & cheese omelette, toast, cereal, milk, orange juice, & tea. I haven’t eaten that well in a while. At first, he offered me an “Irish breakfast” of ham, sausage, bacon, & eggs, but I had to decline since I only eat chicken. We got to chatting, & I learned he used to be a bartender in NYC & his niece goes to Berklee School of Music in Boston. Since I have half a day to kill before catching my 18-hour ferry ride at 9:30 tonight (4:30 pm US time), he suggested I head into Wexford town to explore. This is the city the cabbie had to drive me from to get to Rosslare yesterday. At least I can start learning their train system…already have Boston’s down pat so this should be a breeze.

Walking to the port to buy my ferry ticket, a young man walks by me & says “lovely day, huh?” in his Irish accent & continues on his way. I don’t know if Boston has hardened me a bit because it took me by surprise. I was sitting on the sidewalk drinking my water earlier when this little boy stops dead in front of me, we spend an intense 3 seconds staring at each other as I drink my water, he says hi & walks off. Everyone’s just so friendly. Again, when I was walking to the train, a 5-month backpacker from Australia could tell I was a bit lost so we walked together. She said she “loved my accent” which makes me laugh…never think of myself as the one with the accent.

St. Selskar's Church
My Lucky Machine
Wexford is a cute town that has rows & rows of small alleys with shops & cafes lining the streets full of people & street performers. I passed a casino & thought what better way to spend my time at 2 in the afternoon than to cross off gambling on my bucket list. I made friends with the cashier since I was having trouble with the slots…spent 3 euros & won 1. Definitely worth the experience. I was planning on taking a tour of St. Selskar’s Church from the late 12th century, but the guide was a no show so I soaked up the sun on some grass instead. Cool looking church though.

Mom, this one’s for you. They have them here too!
That is a public toilet. Only 50 cents!

 My Irish dictionary so far:
vacation - holiday
fun - craik (pronounced “crack”)
phone - pax
ok - grand
call - ring

Next stop, Cherbourg, France!
